The short answer

For a small local business in New Zealand in 2026, most people pay somewhere between $500 and $6,000 one-off for a website built for them, or $15 to $180 a month for a DIY builder or a subscription site. Bigger agency projects run to $20,000 and beyond.

Where you land depends far more on who builds it and how than on the site itself. Here are the main routes, with prices taken from New Zealand providers’ own pages, checked on 12 October 2026. Prices are in NZ dollars and shown with or without GST exactly as each provider lists them.

Where our prices sit

We’re a small studio, and our prices are fixed and listed: NZ$1,490 for a one-page site, NZ$2,490 for up to 6 pages with copywriting and booking or enquiry set-up, and NZ$3,490 for up to 12 pages. All are one-off. The care plan is an optional NZ$49/month for hosting, backups, security updates and small changes.

What’s different is the order things happen in. We design your homepage within 24 hours, for free, so you see it before you pay anything. The finished site is live in 72 hours. See exactly what each package includes.

What drives the price

  • Number of pages. A one-page site and a 12-page site with a page per service are different jobs.
  • Copywriting. Good words take time. Some quotes include it, many don’t. Go Digital puts professional copywriting at $500–$3,000 if you pay for it separately (source).
  • Bookings, quotes and ordering. Online booking, quote forms, menus, online ordering or a shop all add set-up time.
  • Photos. Your own phone photos cost nothing. A photographer costs more but often pays off.
  • Local search set-up. Tidying your Google Business Profile and making the site match it.
  • Timeframe. Agencies often quote weeks or months. Webscape, for example, quotes 3 to 4 weeks for a small business site (source).

Ongoing costs people forget

Whichever route you take, budget for these. The ranges are from Go Digital’s 2026 guide.

  • Domain name: about $15–$40 a year for a .co.nz or .nz. Make sure it’s registered in your name, not the designer’s.
  • Hosting: about $10–$50 a month if you pay for it separately. Builders and many care plans include it.
  • Email on your own domain: about $8–$18 per person per month for Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
  • Updates and maintenance: about $50–$200 a month for a freelancer to keep things updated, or nothing if you do it yourself. Decide upfront who changes your hours and prices.

One-off or monthly? Do the three-year maths

A monthly plan looks cheaper on day one. Over three years (36 months), $49 a month comes to $1,764 and $179 a month comes to $6,444, and you usually stop having a site when you stop paying.

A one-off site plus optional care can work out similar or cheaper, and the site stays yours. For example, our Business site is NZ$2,490 once. Add the optional care plan for all three years and the total is NZ$4,254. Compare the three-year total, not the monthly figure.

Is a cheap website worth it?

It can be. A simple, well-made one-page site is often all a small local business needs to start. Look past the headline price at what’s included and what you’re locked into.

Watch for sites built on a platform you can’t leave, domains registered to the designer, long minimum terms, and “from” prices that don’t include the words or the set-up you actually need.

Five questions to ask before you pay anyone

  1. Who owns the domain and the website if I leave?
  2. Is there a lock-in contract or minimum term?
  3. What exactly is included: pages, words, photos, booking, Google Business Profile?
  4. What will I pay every month after launch, and what does that cover?
  5. Can I see a design before I commit?

No website yet? The cheapest sensible start

Set up your free Google Business Profile, register a domain in your name, and start with a clear one-page site. Add pages later when you need them. More on that in No website yet? Start here, or see what a site for tradies or Auckland cafés includes.

How much does a small business website cost in NZ?

Most small local businesses pay between about $500 and $6,000 one-off for a site built for them, or $15 to $180 a month for a DIY builder or subscription site, based on New Zealand providers’ published prices in October 2026. Larger agency projects can cost $20,000 or more. Our own prices are NZ$1,490, NZ$2,490 and NZ$3,490, one-off.

How much does a tradie website cost in NZ?

Jelly Digital’s 2026 guide puts tradie websites in NZ between $1,000 and $15,000+, depending on who builds it. Our tradie sites start at NZ$1,490, and Business at NZ$2,490 suits most tradies. See websites for NZ tradies.

Why do website quotes vary so much?

Mainly the number of pages, whether the words are written for you, extras like booking or online shops, how much strategy and branding is included, and how long the agency spends on it.

What ongoing costs should I budget for?

A domain name (about $15–$40 a year for .co.nz or .nz), hosting if it isn’t included, email on your own domain, and updates. A care plan can cover hosting and small changes. Ours is an optional NZ$49/month.

Do I have to pay monthly for a website?

No. You can pay once for the site and look after it yourself, or add a care plan. Monthly subscription sites spread the cost but usually stop when you stop paying, so compare the three-year total.

Can I see a design before I pay?

With us, yes. We design your homepage within 24 hours for free, and you only pay if you want to go ahead. The full site is live in 72 hours.
